The heart of the EQE 43 lies in its two synchronous motors, delivering an impressive 350 kW and 858 Nm of torque. A weighty concern arises, as the vehicle boasts a 2,525 kg curb weight, which is significantly heavier than one would expect from an AMG. To put it into perspective, the conventional AMG E 53, with a turbocharged six-cylinder in-line engine, weighs 1,950 kg, boasting a better weight-to-power ratio.
However, the EQE 43 defies expectations in acceleration, clocking zero to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, outpacing the AMG E 53 by 0.3 seconds. The secret lies in the instant torque delivery of electric motors, providing a quick and responsive acceleration experience. The weight-to-power ratio might raise eyebrows, but the EQE 43 showcases that electric power can redefine performance metrics.
DRIVING DYNAMICS AND MODES
The EQE 43 offers a range of driving modes, including Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Race Start. Each mode not only adjusts the response of the motors but also tailors the steering, suspension, and sound type. The power delivery varies accordingly, with Slippery mode providing half the power and Sport+ unleashing the full 350 kW.
Surprisingly, acceleration remains linear even in Sport+ mode, thanks to its axial-flow motors and a rotor-shaft cooling system. The unique setup enables rapid acceleration without compromising liveliness, provided the battery is charged to at least 50% capacity. The car’s agility in corners is notable, although its weight becomes evident, especially in fast cornering where a small amount of understeer is noticeable.
COMFORT FIRST
Despite its weight, the EQE 43 prioritises comfort, leveraging the EQS AMG’s four-link front and multilink rear axle construction. The adaptive air suspension, with independent control over compression and rebound phases, ensures a smooth ride. Ground clearance varies with driving modes, dropping by 15 mm on Sport and Sport+, and adjusting based on speed in Comfort mode.
The interior, although a subjective assessment, offers comfort with AMG seats featuring side bolsters and longitudinal seat-length adjustments. However, the rear bench might disappoint due to its short cushion. Mercedes, consistent with its premium badge, provides a dedicated compartment for charging cables, neatly packed in stylish bags.
THE POWER OF REGENERATIVE BRAKING
Mercedes introduces regenerative braking with up to 260 kW of power in D-mode, activated through paddles behind the steering wheel. While the claimed energy consumption is 19.7 kWh/100 km, providing a range of up to 506 km, real-world conditions present a different picture. Practical energy consumption when driven briskly hovered around 25 kWh/100 km, yielding a range of about 370 km. Only in Comfort mode and with careful driving can users approach a significantly higher range between charges.
The 90.6 kWh net battery is a constant across EQE versions. The higher power demands of the AMG EQE, however, slightly impact its range compared to standard models. Despite the Cd of 0.22, falling short of the exceptional 0.20 from EQS, the EQE’s aerodynamics remain commendable, given its power and weight.
ALL ABOUT THE TECH
The cockpit of the EQE AMG impresses with AMG seats and an 11.9” portrait display, showcasing the MBUX system’s capabilities. Intuitive controls, excellent screen resolution, and a 12.3” virtual instrument cluster enhance the driving experience.
The EQE 43 faces challenges attributed to its substantial weight, affecting its agility in corners and overall sporty demeanour. While comfort and range are commendable, the choice of interior materials might leave enthusiasts wanting more. The AMG spirit, albeit hits differently in electric form, persists in the EQE 43, offering a unique driving experience that combines power and comfort.
