ADVENTURE IN AN ICON

INEOS PUTS ITS PATHFINDER TO THE TEST

When you first hear about the INEOS Grenadier, it’s hard not to be intrigued. Here’s a vehicle that confidently enters the rugged SUV arena, claiming to blend the old-school charm of classic off-roaders with modern engineering precision. Naturally, you’ll want to see if it lives up to the hype. On a recent trip to the Kruger National Park to discover more about the advanced INEOS Pathfinder navigation system, we sampled both the Grenadier and Quartermaster in their natural habitat.

The backstory of the INEOS Grenadier is just as captivating as the vehicle itself. In 2017, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the billionaire founder of INEOS, saw an opportunity to fill the gap left by the classic Land Rover Defender, which had ceased production the year before. But Sir Jim didn’t want to create just another SUV; he wanted to revive the spirit of the no-nonsense, go-anywhere vehicles that could take a beating and still ask for more.

The Grenadier was born from this vision. The idea was to take the toughness of yesterday’s 4x4s and fuse it with the precision and reliability of modern engineering. INEOS Automotive, the newly formed automotive division of the company, took on the challenge of bringing this dream to life. They got to work with a mission to build a rugged, reliable, and straightforward off-roader.

DESIGN THAT MEANS BUSINESS

When you first look at the Grenadier, you’ll immediately see that it means business. The design is a clear homage to the boxy, utilitarian shapes of classic off-roaders like the Defender. It’s all about straight lines and sharp angles – nothing flashy, just a pure, rugged aesthetic that screams functionality. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s only about looks; every design element on the Grenadier serves a purpose.

The vehicle is built on a separate ladder-frame chassis, a design that ensures it can handle the toughest terrains with ease. Under the hood, you have a choice between two 3.0-litre inline-six engines – one petrol, one diesel – both sourced from BMW. These engines provide the kind of power and torque you need to conquer the roughest terrain without breaking a sweat.

PATHFINDER: A NEW AGE OFF-ROAD SYSTEM

One feature that sets the Grenadier apart is its Pathfinder system. If you’ve seen plenty of off-road systems before, you might think you know what to expect, but Pathfinder is on another level. Developed by INEOS, this system takes off-road driving to new heights. It’s like having a seasoned guide with you, telling you exactly where to go and how to handle the terrain.

The system includes real-time terrain analysis, helping you figure out the best way to navigate whatever lies ahead. Whether dealing with mud, rocks, or steep inclines, Pathfinder has your back. It also features advanced traction control and differential lock systems, so you’re always in control, no matter how challenging the conditions get.

You’ll appreciate Pathfinder’s capabilities the first time you take it off-road. Imagine driving through South Africa’s Kruger National Park – 160 kilometres of wild, untamed terrain, and Pathfinder makes it easy. Even when the roads disappear, this system keeps you on track, using satellite positioning to guide you from one waypoint to the next. It’s intuitive and easy to use so that you can focus on the drive.

MEET THE QUARTERMASTER

But INEOS didn’t stop with just one version of the Grenadier. The Quartermaster is your answer if you need something with even more utility. This double-cab pickup variant is all about practicality. Whether you’re hauling gear, tackling rough terrain, or just handling your daily commute, the Quartermaster is up for the task.

With its extended wheelbase, you’ll find more cargo space and an impressively smooth ride. The same robust chassis and advanced suspension system that make the standard Grenadier so capable are present here, ensuring you can take on anything from a grocery run to a full-blown off-road adventure.

As you drive the Quartermaster through rugged trails, you’ll appreciate how well it handles. The steering is precise, and the engine – whether you choose petrol or diesel – has plenty of power to get you through tight spots. With its high ground clearance and excellent approach and departure angles, you won’t be stopped by obstacles that might leave other vehicles stranded.

Inside, the Quartermaster is all about business. The cabin is practical and durable, with easy-to-clean surfaces and a layout designed for functionality. But it’s not just utilitarian; there are enough modern amenities to keep you comfortable on long drives, even if those drives take you far off the beaten path.

A NEW CONTENDER WITH CLASSIC ROOTS

So, what’s it like behind the wheel of the Grenadier? In a word, impressive. The first thing you’ll notice is how capable this vehicle is. Whether you’re crawling over rocks or cruising down the highway, the Grenadier feels solid, stable, and ready for anything. The Pathfinder system shines when you’re off-road, giving you the confidence to push the limits without worrying about getting stuck.

The Quartermaster, too, stands out as a practical and versatile option. It’s not just a workhorse; it’s a vehicle you can enjoy driving, whether in the city or deep in the wilderness. The extended wheelbase makes it more comfortable for long drives, and the extra cargo space means you can pack everything you need for an adventure.

AFRICA’S INFLUENCE

One of the fascinating aspects of the Grenadier is its connection to Africa. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s deep love for the continent has clearly influenced the vehicle’s development. INEOS acquired Kavango Engineering in Botswana to help convert Grenadiers into specialised vehicles for wildlife viewing, which tells you much about the Grenadier’s intended use in harsh, remote environments.

During our journey in the Kruger, we also heard about INEOS’s involvement with the Tracker Academy, a program dedicated to training expert trackers in wildlife conservation. This initiative adds another layer of depth to the Grenadier’s story, showing that it’s not just a vehicle built for the wild, but one that’s actively involved in preserving it.

LAST WORD

In the end, the INEOS Grenadier is more than just a nostalgic nod to the off-roaders of the past – it’s a modern, capable machine that stands on its own merits. With the Pathfinder system and the practical, hard-working Quartermaster variant, the Grenadier has everything you need in a rugged off-roader.

If you crave adventure and need a vehicle that can keep up, the Grenadier is worth your attention. It’s a rare blend of heritage and innovation, ready to tackle whatever the adventure throws at you. Whether exploring the bush in Africa or hitting the backroads closer to home, the Grenadier is a vehicle you can rely on.
