Charging the Mercedes-Benz EQE350 4Maric SUV during month two of our four-month-long test has become an experience. Every stop at Audi Centre Menlyn to top up the EQE’s “juice” came with complimentary coffee and new friendships. Their fast-charging station, equipped with state-of-the-art chargers, is a lifesaver, and I’ve started calling the staff there my extended family. They’re as excited about the car as I am, making every visit an event rather than a chore. The electric journey has changed my habits. Overnight home charging is a breeze, but public chargers – and those priceless espresso breaks – are part of the fun.
Range anxiety? Not here. With a realistic range of 460 to 550 km per charge, this beauty made everything from city commutes to weekend adventures effortless.
THRILLS AND SPILLS
Now, let’s talk about performance. The instant electric torque from its dual-motor setup (215 kW and 765 Nm) is exhilarating – it’s like having a personal roller coaster on tap. My wife, however, is less amused by the neck-snapping takeoffs. Naturally, I’ve been using it to annoy her lovingly. Every power surge comes with her signature eye-roll, and I’m here for it. Who says electric cars can’t be fun?
ROOM FOR SEVEN, STYLE FOR ALL
The EQE SUV commands attention with its sleek and aerodynamic design. Its generous proportions grant it an unmistakable road presence while delivering ample space for the whole family. Yet, it’s more than just its size. With a minimalist yet luxurious cabin, this SUV is all about comfort and sophistication. Leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and that stunning MBUX infotainment system make it feel like a high-tech lounge on wheels. My kids were instantly sold on the digital wizardry, while I couldn’t stop admiring the satin-metal finishes.
Speaking of the kids, they’ve now discovered the MBUX Voice Command, and oh boy, do they love talking to Mercedes. “Hey Mercedes, Merry Christmas” was the line of the December holidays, filling every drive with laughter and festive cheer.
Space? Plenty. The 580-litre boot easily swallowed our weekend luggage, and the roomy interior kept all five kids – and their endless chatter – comfortable. This SUV isn’t just built for city driving; it’s a proper family cruiser.
Driving Electric in South Africa
Transitioning to electric mobility in South Africa requires a mindset shift. Charging infrastructure is improving, but planning is still essential for any trip. Luckily, the EQE’s adjustable regenerative braking modes, including one-pedal driving, optimise efficiency, especially in stop-and-go traffic or on hilly terrain. Fast chargers replenish about 90% in 30 to 45 minutes – just enough time for a quick coffee or snack break.
