FOCUS ON FAMILY

GWM TANK 2.0T 8AT 4X4 SUPER LUXURY

When the GWM Tank 300 debuted, it was clear that this SUV wasn’t designed to blend into the crowd. Its bold, boxy design and rugged persona suggested a vehicle that could handle more than just the usual urban commute. Over seven days with the Tank 300 as a daily driver, its true character unfolded. From school runs and city driving to light off-road excursions, it demonstrated a unique balance of refinement and capability.

The Tank 300’s design is unapologetically brutish. Its squared-off silhouette, prominent grille, and striking LED headlamps ensure it stands out in any setting. While it may not be as imposing as its larger sibling, the Tank 500, the Tank 300 boasts a rugged yet proportionate stance that effortlessly draws attention. Throughout the week, passers-by were curious – questions ranged from “How does it handle?” to “What does it cost?”

COMFORT MEETS TECH

Inside, the Tank 300 offers a decent blend of comfort and advanced features. The cabin’s layout, often likened to premium German SUVs, is luxurious without being overbearing. Leather seats provide excellent support, while the high-resolution digital displays deliver a wealth of information. The dashboard design, which some have nicknamed “G-wagon-inspired,” integrates seamlessly with features such as a 12.3” infotainment touchscreen, voice command functionality, and wireless charging.

Space-wise, the Tank 300 accommodates a family with ease. Passengers in the rear enjoy ample legroom, and the high driving position ensures excellent visibility for all. However, the rear-mounted boot door and 400-litre luggage space present challenges for larger families or those with bulkier items. Folding the rear seats expands the capacity, but this reinforces the idea that the Tank 300 leans toward adventure-focused practicality rather than conventional family duties.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

Under the bonnet, the Tank 300 houses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 162 kW and 380 Nm of torque. This powertrain ensures reasonably strong acceleration and overtaking, especially on highways. The eight-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, making it suitable for both city commutes and open-road journeys.

However, the Tank 300 suffers from the same general fuel consumption affliction of most Chinese cars. During the test period, fuel consumption hovered around 10.2 l/100 km – a figure that exceeds that of the Tank’s closest rivals.

ADVENTURE AWAITS

Where the Tank 300 truly shines is off-road. Equipped with a robust four-wheel-drive system, three locking differentials, and multiple terrain response modes, it is well-prepared to tackle rough terrain. Features such as “Tank Turn” – allowing the vehicle to pivot in tight spaces – and crawl control make it adept at navigating challenging conditions. Gravel roads and uneven trails posed no challenge during testing, reaffirming the Tank 300’s status as a capable off-road warrior.

LAST WORD

The GWM Tank 300 is a distinctive addition to the SUV market. Its bold design, luxurious interior, and off-road capabilities set it apart from the crowd. While its hybrid powertrain doesn’t deliver class-leading fuel efficiency, it provides ample power and smooth operation. The slightly limited boot space and rear door design may deter some potential buyers, but these are small compromises for an SUV that excels in blending style with substance.

For those who value adventurous versatility in an SUV without sacrificing modern amenities, the Tank 300 offers a compelling package. Whether navigating city streets or exploring untamed trails, it proves to be a dependable companion, ready for whatever lies ahead.
