AN IDYLLIC FRENCH RIVER CRUISE ADVENTURE

PARIS TO CHARENTE IN THE RENAULT TRAFIC SPACECLASS SIGNATURE

Our journey to Charente, home to the Cognac region in France, began in Paris with a sense of anticipation as we boarded our luxury mobile lounge, the magnificent Renault Trafic SpaceClass Signature. ROCAMADOUR: ANCIENT SENTRY OF THE DORDOGNE

Arriving in Rocamadour in the late afternoon, we were immediately beguiled by its mediaeval charm. Residing in a hotel dating back to the 15th century provided an enchanting haven from where to explore the winding streets, the famous pilgrimage site, the Sanctuary of Rocamadour, and the breathtaking views from the ramparts. Our days in the Dordogne were filled with leisurely drives, exquisite local cuisine, and visits to the region’s famed chateaux, including Château de Beynac and Château de Castelnaud.

LE BOAT: LUXURY CRUISING ON THE CHARENTE

After a few days of soaking in the Dordogne’s beauty, we headed to Jarnac on the Charente River to embark on our self-catering and self-skippered cruise with Le Boat. Our home for the following ten days was an eight-sleeper houseboat, comfortably accommodating our group of four couples. Filled with excitement, we set off on the Charente River, a romantic relic known for its serene beauty and historical significance.

The cruise entails a round-trip voyage between Angoulême and Rochefort on the Atlantic Ocean. Angoulême is renowned for its comic strip museum and vibrant street art. We moored at Houmeau Port and wandered through the city’s old town, exploring its narrow streets, the impressive 12th-century cathedral, and the Paper Museum. Colourful comic strips painted on the city walls danced playfully in full sight as we enjoyed a leisurely coffee at a terrace café, a gentle reminder to soak in the moment and enjoy the slow life in France.

Continuing our journey, we reached Trois-Palis, a charming village with a towering bell tower visible from afar. The highlight was a visit to Chocolaterie Letuffe, where we indulged in delectable chocolates and participated in a masterclass to learn the art of exquisite chocolate-making. The rich aromas and hands-on experience made this stop a particularly memorable experience.

In Jarnac, a town marked by its elegant white houses and deep connection to cognac production, we toured the Courvoisier distillery, gaining insight into the intricate process of crafting this world-famous spirit. The history and tradition engulfed in each sip of cognac left us with a sense of fascination and a greater appreciation for this luxurious drink.

As we entered the quaint town of Cognac, we were greeted by a poetic canvas of black fungus-covered rooftops resulting from the “angels’ share” evaporation from cognac cellars. On our visit to the Chateau de Cognac, home to the Baron Otard distillery, we wandered through the salt merchants’ houses and the Récollets Convent. A cognac tasting at Rémy Martin and a sumptuous dinner at Le Taj Mahal Indian restaurant rounded off our stay with a perfect blend of French heritage and international flavours.

As we sailed into Saintes, the city of art and history, we were transported back in time. Standing proudly on the river bank, the Germanicus Arch welcomed us like sailors from ages ago, and the ancient Gallo-Roman arena whispered stories of gladiators past. We explored the Abbaye aux Dames and St. Eutrope Church, marvelling at the Romanesque architecture and serene ambience. The quaint tourist train offered a delightful overview of the city’s rich history and culture.

Our final destination on the Charente River was Rochefort, accessed via a short train ride from St. Savinien. Rochefort’s elegance and naval heritage are impressive. We visited the restored arsenal and the Musée de la Marine, learning about the town’s shipbuilding legacy. The home of Pierre Loti, now a museum, is captivating, with its collection of oriental artefacts and seafaring tales.

THE LOIRE VALLEY

With our river cruise adventure drawing to an end, we loaded our faithful Renault Trafic and, once again, travelled in SpaceClass with our sights set on the Loire Valley for our return journey to Paris. The picturesque town of Amboise, with its majestic chateau and connections to Leonardo da Vinci, was our first stop. We wandered the royal chateau, marvelling at its grandeur and historical significance. The vibrant streets and delightful cafes added charm to our pleasurable visit.

Our final stop was in Orleans, a city steeped in history and famously associated with Joan of Arc, her statue on display in the city square, and the house where she lived now a museum. We explored the impressive Cathédrale Sainte-Croix d’Orléans, strolled along the Loire River, and absorbed the old town’s vibrant yet enchanting atmosphere. The blend of history, culture, and modern charm provided a fitting end to our French adventure.

On returning to Paris, we reflected on our journey through the Charente region and the scenic landscapes of France. Blended in a river of cultural exploration, culinary delights, and days of blissful relaxation, this made for an unforgettable voyage.
