It’s big, brawny and it’s undoubtedly the bakkie to rule a road of not-so-ordinary pick-up trucks. It’s the Shelby F-150 and it is coming to South Africa next year.
Shelby South Africa has announced on Tuesday that it will bring the performance version of the world’s best-selling vehicle to South African soil, and it will be available in right-hand drive.
The immense Shelby F-150 is powered by a 5-litre V8 supercharged engine that produces nothing short of 565 kW of face-tearing power. This considerable power output is partly made possible by a series of high-performance upgrades including an uprated throttle body, fuel injectors and a Shelby-tuned Borla Performance exhaust system.
It’s built on the platform of Ford’s US-spec F-150 Lariat Luxury derivative with the addition of 20” wheels and BF-Goodrich all-terrains. There’s also a Baja option that comes standard with a cutting-edge Fox racing suspension set-up and a 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo powerplant.
While there are many aesthetic enhancements like a honeycomb racing grille, the striking Shelby Snake and custom bumpers to set it apart from the rest of the pack, it is its exclusivity that makes it truly desirable. Only 500 models will be built worldwide with each entered into the Shelby American Registry.
The performance F-150 is expected to come with a price tag ranging from R2.5-million to R3-million, for the top-spec Baja Raptor derivative with a full performance conversion and Fox suspension system. It also comes with a three-year/50,000 km Shelby Warranty.
“We are delighted to confirm that the order book is open for a limited number of 565-kilowatt performance bakkies to satisfy the ultimate needs of South African bakkie owners,” ShelbySA CEO Peter Lindenberg confirmed.
