The BMW X3 has long been a cornerstone in the Bavarian automaker’s lineup, seamlessly blending luxury, performance, and versatility. With the recent launch of the fourth-generation model in South Africa, the X3 continues to set benchmarks in the premium midsize SUV segment. This latest iteration boasts significant enhancements and underscores BMW’s commitment to South Africa, with the Rosslyn plant playing a pivotal role in its global production strategy.
Established in 1973, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, located just outside Pretoria, holds the honour of being BMW’s first manufacturing facility outside Germany. Over the decades, this plant has been instrumental in producing iconic models, including the BMW 3 Series, for an impressive 35 years, during which over a million units were built. In 2018, the plant began producing the third-generation BMW X3, marking a new chapter in its history. This move was bolstered by a substantial R6 billion investment to upgrade the facility to meet the exacting standards of modern automotive manufacturing. The commitment didn’t stop there; in 2023, BMW announced an additional R4.2 billion investment to prepare Plant Rosslyn for the production of the next-generation X3 plug-in hybrid, further solidifying its role in BMW’s global operations.
Since the first-generation BMW X3 arrived in South Africa in 2004, it has been one of BMW’s staple models. Its consistent popularity reflects the brand’s ability to evolve with the times, offering vehicles that meet customers’ changing needs. The latest X3 builds on this legacy, blending tradition with innovation to provide a car that is a joy to drive and a statement of sustainable luxury.
THE FOURTH-GENERATION X3
Launched in South Africa in February 2025, the fourth-generation BMW X3 (internally designated as the G45) harmoniously combines evolutionary design and cutting-edge technology. While retaining the core attributes that have made the X3 a favourite among discerning drivers, the new model introduces several noteworthy enhancements.

DESIGN AND AESTHETICS
Off the bat, the new X3 exhibits a more assertive stance, courtesy of its increased dimensions – 34 mm longer and 29 mm wider than its predecessor – paired with a 25 mm reduction in height. This gives the vehicle a sportier and more dynamic profile. The front fascia is dominated by a prominent kidney grille flanked by sleek LED headlights featuring L-shaped daytime running lights. The rear is equally compelling, with T-shaped LED taillights and a refined tailgate design. For those seeking an extra touch of sportiness, the M Sport package offers distinctive design elements, including larger air intakes and unique alloy wheels, enhancing its dynamic appearance.
Stepping inside the new X3 reveals a cabin that seamlessly merges luxury with advanced technology. Dominating the dashboard is BMW’s Curved Display, integrating a 12.3″ digital instrument cluster with a 14.9″ central touchscreen running the latest BMW Operating System 9. This setup ensures intuitive access to a plethora of functions, from navigation to entertainment. The Interaction Bar further elevates the interior ambience, a novel feature that incorporates touch-sensitive controls and ambient lighting, creating a sophisticated atmosphere. Standard amenities include three-zone climate control, wireless charging, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems such as Front Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning.
POWERTRAIN OPTIONS
Being from the source market, BMW South Africa’s product specialists could choose from the full array of available derivatives. In the end, buyers have been treated to a diverse lineup of the new X3, catering to a wide range of preferences.
The starter pack X3 20d xDrive is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine delivering 145 kW and 400 Nm of torque. Equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid system, it achieves a balanced blend of performance and efficiency, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.
One up, the 30e xDrive marks a significant milestone as a plug-in hybrid variant, combining a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 220 kW and 450 Nm. It offers an impressive electric-only range of up to 90 kilometres, making it ideal for urban commutes and longer journeys. Notably, the Rosslyn plant is the exclusive global producer of this PHEV model, underscoring South Africa’s strategic importance in BMW’s electrification strategy.
For enthusiasts craving rousing performance, the X3 M50 xDrive features a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine that produces 293 kW and 580 Nm. This powerhouse propels the X3 from zero to 100 km/h in a swift 4.6 seconds, delivering a dynamic and refined driving experience.
DRIVING DYNAMICS
BMW’s reputation for delivering the “Ultimate Driving Machine” is well-reflected in the new X3. The vehicle’s chassis has been meticulously tuned to offer a harmonious balance between comfort and agility. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensures optimal traction across varying road conditions, while the available adaptive suspension allows drivers to tailor the ride quality to their preferences. Whether navigating city streets or exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations, the X3 remains composed and responsive.
EXPERIENCING THE X3 FIRSTHAND
To truly appreciate the capabilities of the new X3, BMW organised an exclusive launch event featuring a scenic drive from Pretoria to the renowned Sun City resort. This route, encompassing a mix of urban environments, open highways, and winding rural roads, provided an ideal setting to showcase the vehicle’s versatility. Behind the wheel of the X3 30e xDrive, the immediate torque from the electric motor made for effortless acceleration, particularly beneficial when overtaking slower traffic on the N4. The transition between electric and petrol power was seamless, highlighting the sophistication of BMW’s hybrid technology. Upon arrival at Sun City, the X3’s elegant design garnered appreciative glances, reaffirming its status as a premium Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), which is BMW-speak for an SUV.
THE ROSSLYN PLANT
With the X3 being built in South Africa for the global market, Plant Rosslyn continues to be a vital component in BMW’s worldwide manufacturing operations. The plant’s strategic location allows BMW to efficiently serve key markets while leveraging South Africa’s skilled workforce. The transition to producing the plug-in hybrid variant is a testament to BMW’s vision of sustainable mobility and its confidence in the capabilities of its South African operations.
