On a journey to explore the capabilities of the C40 Recharge, we took to the roads of the Cape Winelands to experience first-hand the driving dynamics and technological advancements of this groundbreaking electric vehicle.

From the moment you set eyes on the Volvo C40 Recharge, its captivating design commands attention. With a sleek and aerodynamic silhouette, the C40 Recharge seamlessly an SUV’s versatility with the elegance of a coupé. The distinctive rear-end design, complemented by the lower roofline, creates an unmistakable presence on the road. Stepping inside the cabin, one is greeted by a harmonious blend of luxury and sustainability. Recycled materials and a leather-free interior underscore Volvo’s commitment to eco-friendly practices, while the panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light, enhancing the sense of openness and connectivity with the surrounding environment.
INFOTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY
At the heart of the Volvo C40 Recharge lies a state-of-the-art infotainment system, co-developed with Google, that sets new standards for connectivity and convenience.
Integrated Google apps and services, including Google Maps and Google Assistant, provide intuitive navigation and voice-controlled functionality. The responsive touchscreen interface, combined with unlimited data and over-the-air software updates, ensures that the C40 Recharge remains at the forefront of technological innovation. Whether streaming music, accessing real-time traffic updates, or adjusting vehicle settings, the C40 Recharge offers an immersive digital experience for drivers and passengers alike.
PERFORMANCE AND DRIVING EXPERIENCE
Behind the wheel of the Volvo C40 Recharge, the transition to electric mobility is nothing short of exhilarating. Powered by twin electric motors and a 78 kWh battery pack, the C40 Recharge delivers instantaneous torque and smooth acceleration, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The all-wheel-drive system provides confidence-inspiring traction, while the low centre of gravity enhances stability and agility through corners. During our test drive, the C40 Recharge exhibited impressive responsiveness and refinement, effortlessly gliding over various road surfaces with minimal noise and vibration. Whether navigating urban streets or embarking on long-distance journeys, the C40 Recharge offers a dynamic and engaging driving experience that redefines the notion of electric mobility.
CHARGING
Despite the buzz surrounding “range anxiety,” the reality is far less daunting, even in South Africa, where public charging infrastructure remains limited. With a home garage equipped with a 240 V outlet, charging an EV becomes as simple as plugging it in and letting it replenish overnight. Waking up to a full charge each morning swiftly dispels any lingering doubts concerning range limitations.
However, to truly test the range anxiety theory, we ventured out in search of a public charging station in Cape Town. Discovering an ultra-fast public charging station required some effort and forethought. Our initial stop at Willowbridge revealed a charger out of order, but thanks to the onboard navigation system, we were directed to a functional ultra-fast charger at Audi Century City. In just 45 minutes, it charged the battery from approximately 20% to 90%. While opting for an 80% charge could have saved us about 10 minutes, we were committed to testing the limits.
Nevertheless, the absence of true ultra-fast public chargers in South Africa, capable of delivering 250 kW DC or more, combined with most EVs, like the C40 Recharge, maxing out at a 150 kW DC charge rate, means charging remains a relatively slow and time-consuming process. This reality underscores the ongoing development of the charging network in South Africa.
SAFETY
Safety has always been at the forefront for Volvo Cars, and the C40 Recharge upholds this tradition with a full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, compliments of a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance systems and safety features. From collision avoidance and lane-keeping assistance, to pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control, the C40 Recharge offers peace of mind on every journey.
