The mu-X range has been expanded to six models, primarily focusing on the new entry-level 1.9TD LS model. Aimed at family-oriented customers stepping up from a sedan, hatchback or bakkie, the new budget-friendly model is well-packaged to offer the SUV experience at an approachable price. After having experienced the new model, it is well worth the market’s attention and here is why.
Despite being a budget-friendly entry, the Isuzu mu-X1.9TD LS is far from an entry-level SUV. Instead, the mu-X boasts the handsome aesthetics of its brethren, together with the latest styling updates for 2023. While these updates may take an aficionado’s eye to notice, they do result in a great-looking vehicle. For 2023, there is an attractive new Norwegian Blue colour option, which contrasts nicely against the dark Magnetite finishes for the radiator grille, bumpers, side steps, roof rails and front fog lamp bezels. You also get privacy glass for the rear windows as standard to shield you from the prying eyes of the streets. Adding to the visual appeal are modern LED daytime running lights, Bi-LED headlamps, fog lamps and combination taillights, which come standard on all models to grant the vehicle an upmarket aura. To complete the look, the mu-X rides on attractive 18” alloy wheels, and includes a full-sized alloy spare wheel.
PRACTICAL CABIN AT A BARGAIN
The selling point for most SUVs is the practicality of having a spacious cabin. Here, the mu-X certainly does not disappoint. In addition to being the class leader in terms of space, the cabin is also well-appointed and ergonomically sound. Tying in with the exterior styling, Isuzu employed the same dark Magnetite accents to enhance sophistication in the cabin. A key feature is leather seats with eight-way and four-way power adjustments for the driver and passenger.
Being a modern vehicle, the mu-X is not wanting for technology. The 7” touchscreen integrates Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and built-in Wi-Fi does well to scratch the tech itch for most people. The experience is further enhanced by front and rear USB charging ports. However, new customers should note that the cabin is intentionally designed to be hard-wearing, meaning it may sacrifice some tactile luxury in the name of durability.
A STRONG CASE FOR COMPACT POWER
As the name suggests, the 1.9TD LS mu-X is powered by Isuzu’s 1,899 cc four-cylinder intercooled turbodiesel engine from the D-Max. Codenamed RZ4E, the 1.9 Ddi unit churns out 110 kW at 3,600 rpm and 350 Nm between 1,800 and 2,600 rpm, and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Despite its relatively modest displacement, the engine supplies sufficient grunt, brand-synced reliability, and excellent fuel economy. All these welcome attributes are thanks to an advanced design which utilises a high-pressure common rail direct injection system and a high-efficiency variable geometry turbocharger. The engine is punchy and economical, boasting a claimed 7 l/100 km fuel consumption number.
SAFETY AND CONVENIENCE
As standard, the 1.9TD LS includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with traction control, ABS brakes with EBD and brake assist, Brake Override Accelerator (BOA), hill-start assist, hill-descent control, Trailer Sway Control (TSC) and cruise control. Braked towing capacity is a decent 2,100 kg.
There are also driver and front passenger airbags, front-seat side airbags, curtain airbags and driver’s knee airbags.
In recognising that most buyers would likely be upgrading from smaller vehicles, Isuzu appreciated that the SUV dimensions could be intimidating. To aid manoeuvring, the 1.9TD LS features front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera to help navigate the big SUV into tight spots.
LAST WORD
Isuzu is no stranger to the C-SUV, yet the market tends to lean more towards staple offerings from Toyota and Ford. As good as the 3.0-litre mu-X is, the range needed an affordability champion to make it more enticing against the competition, and the new 1.9TD LS does just that.
