IT’S A G-THING

There are cars, and then there’s the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or “Geländewagen”. This isn’t just a car; it’s a statement, an icon that transcends time. For seven days, I had the pleasure of testing this automotive marvel, and it didn’t take long to realise the G-Wagon is all about the lifestyle.

The plan was simple: the Driven team would share the test drive experience of one of the most beloved SUVs on the planet, but the allure of the G-Wagon proved “Stronger than Time”. I held onto it for the full seven days, and not once did I hear a complaint about that decision – especially from my kids, who revelled in being the most famous passengers everywhere we went. For a week, the G-Wagon wasn’t just a car but an experience that elevated our daily routine.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, officially known as the G-Class, was conceived in the late 1970s as a rugged military vehicle. Over the decades, it has evolved, blending its utilitarian roots with the finest luxury features. Despite its modern refinements, the G-Wagon has retained its signature boxy design, which makes it instantly recognisable.

LIMITED EDITION WITH LUXE

The G400d we tested is the 45th Anniversary Edition, available in only two colours: emerald green and metallic black. Its exclusive Manufaktur trim offers leather grab handles, superior interior treatment, and special topographical accents, including unique branding on the spare wheel cover that screams “adventure.” The 20-inch alloy wheels with five twin spokes and yacht-blue stitching add bespoke luxury.

On the inside, it’s clear that this isn’t just about roughing it. The leather upholstery with raised stitching, the Alcantara roof lining, and a widescreen infotainment system make it clear that luxury and off-road prowess coexist, albeit in a rather unconventional blend. Despite being designed for rugged terrains, the G400d still feels refined, thanks to these premium touches highlighting its dual purpose as a luxury SUV and off-road icon.

POWER MEETS GRACE

Under its 45th Anniversary Edition hood is a 2.9-litre straight-six turbodiesel engine that churns out 243 kW and a formidable 700 Nm of torque. It’s more than enough to haul this beast up any hill, and its smooth, predictable power makes everyday driving effortless. Whether navigating city streets or tackling rugged off-road trails, the G400d’s advanced suspension and Mercedes-Benz’s 9G-Tronic gearbox offer a smooth, refined driving experience, even on rough roads. It handles with surprising agility for such a tall SUV, and its commanding presence on the road is matched by its incredible towing capabilities.

Surprisingly, the suspension is adaptive, which curbs the inherent “body roll” typical of ladder-frame vehicles. The electronic suspension stiffens when needed, ensuring the G400d is as comfortable on urban roads as on unpaved trails. It’s the kind of vehicle that inspires confidence no matter where you take it.

THE COOL FACTOR

What stood out the most wasn’t just the performance or the sheer luxury of the G-Wagon—it was the attention it attracted. My kids and I became mini-celebrities for a week. Pulling up at the school drop-off line in this rugged yet refined beast earned approving nods from parents and wide-eyed stares from kids. Even at the supermarket, I caught passersby sneaking glances and snapping photos. Not every day does a car turn mundane moments into unforgettable experiences, but the G-Wagon did just that.

Even our neighbours couldn’t resist striking up conversations about the car, and I have unofficially been crowned the “cool dad of the week”.

PRACTICALITY MEETS LUXURY

While the G-Wagon is undoubtedly a luxury vehicle, it doesn’t forsake practicality. The spacious interior comfortably accommodates my family, and the ample cargo space makes it perfect for errands and weekend getaways. The widescreen infotainment system and Burmester surround sound system add an extra indulgence, transforming every drive into a concert hall on wheels.

Despite all these luxuries, the topographical detailing on the spare wheel cover and the Schöckl Proved branding made it clear: this SUV was made for adventure, even if the only rough terrain you’re tackling is the local grocery store parking lot.

LAST WORD

The G400d is more than just a car; it’s an experience. From its distinctive styling and luxury appointments to its capable performance both on and off the road, it’s a vehicle that leaves a lasting impression. It’s not for everyone, and its R3.7 million price tag puts it squarely in the realm of the aspirational. Still, for those who can afford it, the G-Wagon is the ultimate expression of status, luxury, and performance.

In the end, the G-Wagon is not just about driving. It’s about the lifestyle it embodies. It’s about making a statement that says, “I’ve arrived.” Whether in the city or the countryside, the G400d proves it’s as much about presence as it is about performance.
