LESS IS MORE

MERCEDES-AMG C43 4MATIC

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 doesn’t merely rely on flashy gadgets and gizmos to impress. Sure, it has a mild-hybrid assist system, rear-wheel steering, and an F1-inspired electric exhaust turbocharger, but the real magic happens when you get behind the wheel. Despite all the high-tech features, the C43 feels wonderfully old-school when out on the road.

Underneath its fifth-generation C-Class hood, the C43 ditches the previous model’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 for a 2.0-litre, single-turbo four-cylinder engine. This might seem like a step down to some, but don’t be fooled. This hand-built, AMG-specific engine is a powerhouse, already proven in all AMG A-Class variants. The C43 takes it further with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an innovative electric exhaust-driven turbocharger from Mercedes.

Impressively, the C43 generates 16 kW and 12 Nm more power than its predecessor, despite having a smaller engine and fewer turbos. And that’s not even accounting for the extra electric boost provided by the 48-volt system.

Paired with the engine is a nine-speed automatic transmission with a wet clutch, which improves launches and reduces weight compared to a traditional torque-converter setup. That said, during quick launches, the C43’s auto gearbox sometimes scrambles for more torque, leaving the impression that the AMG might be holding the horses to spare the gearbox.

While the powertrain becomes more complex, the AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel-drive system simplifies things by maintaining a fixed, rear-biased torque split. It’s a clever balance of technology and simplicity.

REAR STEER A REVELATION

One of the standout features of the C43 is its standard AMG Ride Control suspension. Equipped with adaptive dampers and three settings (Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus), the chassis is noticeably more taught, although the suspension is on the firm side regardless of setting. Additionally, the car comes with rear-axle steering, which enhances manoeuvrability at low speeds and stability at higher speeds. The handling is further enhanced by large 19″ wheels (shod with 245/40 tyres at the front and 265/35’s at the rear), or optional 20″ alloys (boasting 245/35s and 265/30s), as well as the upgraded brakes and chassis components.

In everyday driving situations, particularly in Comfort or Efficient modes, the C43’s agile four-cylinder engine is smooth, unobtrusive, and surprisingly quiet. The stop-start system operates seamlessly, without any noticeable hesitation during start-up. Plus, the Glide mode allows the engine to shut down while coasting, improving overall fuel efficiency. Although the Comfort ride setting can be a bit stiff on uneven surfaces, the C43 remains an enjoyable daily driver.

Switching to Sport or Sport Plus modes brings the C43 to life. The electric motors integrated with the engine and turbocharger provide noticeable boost, with transitions so seamless that it feels like the engine almost magically grows in size and sprouts an extra turbo when needed. The driving experience is incredibly satisfying, with the C43 sprinting from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. Moreover, the turbocharger responds quickly and precisely, delivering immediate and robust acceleration while shifting gears smoothly.

The handling of the C43 perfectly complements its high-performance engine, delivering exceptional grip at all four corners. The adaptive suspension, variable steering, and rear-wheel steering systems work together seamlessly, making the changes in steering ratio imperceptible. Thanks to the AMG-tuned stability control system, the car feels incredibly surefooted in corners, with near-perfect steering weight and feedback.

INTERIOR BLISS

Inside the C43, the next-generation dashboard showcases the car’s advanced technology. A large 12.3″ digital instrument cluster sits in front of the driver, while an 11.9″ centre LCD touchscreen, powered by Mercedes’ MBUX software, takes centre stage. This version of MBUX features AMG-specific themes and offers an optional AMG Track Pace data-logging app, perfect for recording lap times, speed, and various performance parameters on the racetrack.

The rest of the C43’s tech and safety features are on par with the fifth-generation C-Class, including optional lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, Burmester 3D Surround Sound, and more.

Overall, the interior nicely combines the luxury you expect from Mercedes with the dynamic touches you want from an AMG. There’s an AMG steering wheel, sports seats, and several AMG-specific embellishments, and the digital instrument panel can be changed between various displays.

LAST WORD

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 impresses not only with its electrification technology but also with its focus on enhancing the driving experience. Rather than simply relying on flashy gadgets, the engineers at AMG have skilfully blended advanced technologies to create a car that feels natural, engaging, and almost magical on the road.
