CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM AS TOYOTA FORECASTS GROWTH IN 2025

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) hosted its much-anticipated State of the Motor Industry (SOMI) event at Kyalami International Grand Prix Circuit last month, offering an insightful glimpse into the automotive giant’s roadmap for 2025. With cautious optimism, TSAM President and CEO Andrew Kirby painted a compelling picture of the year ahead, blending economic projections with an ambitious product rollout strategy that reaffirms Toyota’s dominant position in the South African market.

The Toyota South Africa State of the Motor Industry event is South Africa’s pre-eminent forecasting session. At this event, the country’s number-one-selling brand dusts off its crystal ball to share its projections for the year ahead and showcase the new models and upgrades it intends to bring to market over the next 12 months.

In his address this year, Andrew Kirby focused on a market that shows promising signs of recovery while still grappling with global and local economic headwinds. A projected 3.7% growth in vehicle sales this year would take the market closer to pre-pandemic levels, a milestone that the CEO believes is within reach. However, Kirby was quick to temper this optimism with a note of caution – the ever-volatile Rand and potential inflationary pressures could influence consumer purchasing power, making interest rates a critical factor to watch. For TSAM, the challenge lies in navigating this economic uncertainty while delivering value-driven, innovative products across its range.

THE NEW STUFF

This year, Toyota’s product strategy is anchored in six major launches designed to cement the brand’s relevance in a competitive and ever-evolving landscape. At the centre of the spotlight is the facelifted Corolla Cross, an enduring favourite that now boasts refined exterior styling and a refreshed cabin designed to elevate the ownership experience. As the Corolla Cross remains one of Toyota’s strongest offerings, these updates underline the automaker’s commitment to keeping its portfolio both contemporary and appealing.

Adding to the excitement, the Hilux Legend 55 debuted at the SOMI event, celebrating 55 years of Hilux production with an exclusive design that blends rugged functionality and striking aesthetics. Its wide-body design, complemented by fender extensions and a distinctive black grille, speaks to the versatility that has long defined the Hilux – but with an added dash of visual drama. This celebratory model is further equipped with practical enhancements such as a roller shutter, ensuring it’s not just a showpiece but a capable workhorse. Scheduled for release in July, the Legend 55 is poised to capture the imagination of both loyal Hilux fans and new customers alike.

Meanwhile, the Fortuner GR-Sport promises to add an extra dose of adrenaline to Toyota’s SUV lineup. It currently sports the most potent version of Toyota’s evergreen 2.8-litre GD-6 engine and is engineered to deliver robust performance and an engaging drive. The GR-tuned suspension, complete with Monotube shock absorbers, complements the enhanced powertrain, ensuring this Fortuner’s dynamic personality matches its bold styling. It’s a vehicle that stands out on the road and offers genuine capability for those who demand more from their SUVs.

In the performance realm, the updated GR Yaris made waves with its 2025 iteration. Powered by a reworked 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbo engine, it now churns out an exhilarating 201 kW and 400 Nm of torque. This pocket rocket remains an enthusiast’s dream, with the addition of an eight-speed automatic gearbox expanding its appeal. Toyota’s commitment to fine-tuning even niche models like the GR Yaris reflects the brand’s broader philosophy of catering to diverse customer needs.

Luxury was not left out of the equation, with Lexus unveiling several noteworthy additions to its South African portfolio. The all-new Lexus GX SUV also rolled out on the elaborate stage, bringing a refined blend of opulence and off-road capability. Equipped with a turbocharged V6 engine, the GX offers a choice of variants tailored to both luxury-seekers and adventure enthusiasts. Its Overtrail model, with advanced off-road technologies like Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control, epitomises the versatility Lexus is increasingly bringing to its range.

Equally significant is the expansion of the LX lineup, headlined by the new LX 700h hybrid flagship. With a potent 341 kW powertrain, this luxury SUV showcases the seamless integration of performance and efficiency. Inside, Lexus has doubled down on premium appointments, offering features like Auto Parking, seat massage functions, and the latest iteration of Lexus Safety Sense. These advancements signal Lexus’ intent to push boundaries in the premium SUV segment.

ADAPTABILITY BY DESIGN

Throughout the event, the underlying message was clear: Toyota’s leadership in the South African market is not merely a matter of volume but of adaptability and innovation. By addressing diverse customer demands – from the Corolla Cross’s practicality to the GR Yaris’s high-octane thrills and the Lexus GX’s bespoke luxury – TSAM continues to set benchmarks that competitors will find challenging to meet.

However, it’s not just about product. Kirby’s remarks highlighted Toyota’s broader vision of resilience and adaptability. By focusing on local manufacturing, embracing hybrid technology, and staying attuned to the nuances of South Africa’s economic landscape, TSAM demonstrates a forward-thinking approach that balances short-term gains with long-term sustainability.

LAST WORD

As the automotive industry braces for another year of challenges and opportunities, Toyota’s 2025 SOMI event served as a timely reminder of the brand’s unwavering commitment to innovation, customer-centricity, and excellence. Whether through special edition milestones like the Hilux Legend 55 or the continued evolution of its hybrid offerings, Toyota is clearly steering toward a future where its legacy remains as robust as the vehicles it builds.
