MERCEDES-BENZ KICKS INTO HIGH GEAR IN 2025

Mercedes-Benz is poised to captivate the South African automotive market in 2025 by introducing three exceptional models: the all-electric G580, the dynamic Mercedes-AMG E53, and the sleek Mercedes-AMG CLE53. These vehicles, unveiled during an exclusive event at Zwartkops Raceway in February, signify the brand’s commitment to innovation, performance, and luxury.

Last year was tough on many local legacy automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, one of the most prominent. Although the brand sacrificed sales to less-premium alternatives in line with industry trends in 2024, the decline has hit the local subsidiary particularly hard. Despite its production success at the Mercedes plant in East London, where over 90,000 C-Class units rolled off the line destined for the global market, the decline has hit the local subsidiary particularly hard.

But Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) is not taking it lying down.

With a new co-CEO, Claudius Steinhoff, at the helm, MBSA will work to renew customer relationships, focus on offering more value for money, and entice the market with a host of powerful new models.

MERCEDES-BENZ G580

The legendary G-Class, renowned for its rugged off-road prowess and unmistakable design, embarks on a new journey with the G580. This electric variant retains the classic boxy silhouette but introduces cutting-edge technology to the lineup. Equipped with four electric motors – one at each wheel – the G580 delivers a formidable 432 kW and an astounding 1,164 Nm of torque. This setup enables the G580 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, a remarkable feat for a vehicle weighing approximately 3,050 kg. The 116 kWh lithium-ion battery offers a range of up to 473 km on a single charge, ensuring that adventurers can venture far and wide without compromise. For those concerned about charging times, the G580 supports DC fast charging up to 200 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 32 minutes. Notably, the G580 features the innovative “G-TURN” function, enabling the vehicle to perform tank turns on loose surfaces, enhancing its manoeuvrability in challenging terrains. The interior seamlessly blends luxury with advanced technology, featuring a 12.3″ MBUX infotainment system, ambient lighting, and premium materials throughout. The G580 is expected to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2025, with pricing starting at R4,647,456.

MERCEDES-AMG E53

The E-Class has long been celebrated for its harmonious balance of comfort and performance. The upcoming Mercedes-AMG E53 elevates this legacy, offering enthusiasts a blend of dynamic driving and refined luxury. Under the hood lies a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, augmented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This powertrain produces an impressive 430 kW and 750 Nm of torque, channelled through the AMG 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. This configuration propels the E53 from zero to 100 km/h in a swift 3.8 seconds. The exterior design exudes athleticism, with AMG-specific elements such as a distinctive radiator grille, aggressive air intakes, and sleek 19″ alloy wheels, with options for 20″ and 21″ variants. Inside, the cabin is adorned with high-quality materials, including Nappa leather upholstery, and features the latest MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3″ touchscreen display. The E53 is slated to debut in South Africa in 2025, with pricing expected to surpass the R2 million mark.

MERCEDES-AMG CLE53

The Mercedes-AMG CLE53 redefines the luxury coupé segment by merging performance with sophisticated design. Serving as a successor to both the C-Class and E-Class coupés, the CLE53 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, complemented by a mild-hybrid system. This combination delivers 330 kW and 560 Nm of torque, accelerating the coupé from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.2 seconds. The exterior showcases AMG’s signature Panamericana grille, flared wheel arches, and a sleek rear design with quad exhaust outlets. The interior is a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to luxury, featuring AMG sports seats, a 12.3″ digital instrument cluster, and an 11.9″ MBUX infotainment touchscreen with AMG-specific displays. The CLE53 is anticipated to arrive in South Africa in mid to late 2025, with pricing details to be announced closer to its release.
