From cutting-edge track racers to death-defying aerial stunts, Austrian energy drink company, Red Bull, knows how to get the blood pumping. And now, they are giving competitive members of the public the opportunity to get in on the thrills and spills.
After an eight-year absence, the Red Bull Box Cart Race is finally returning to the streets of South Africa where anyone (brave enough) can claim eternal glory for building and racing one of the fastest human-powered machines around.
Joburg is one of only five cities worldwide that will play host to the 2018 series of box car racing. The South African leg — which will take place on Sunday, 16 September — promises to be the steepest and definitely the most exciting race of the year.
The number one rule, though, is relatively straightforward: no mechanical form of propulsion is allowed. And, while the rules explicitly state that engines, catapults, batteries or Eskom’s electricity are outlawed, we reckon that steam propulsion too will be frowned upon.
Instead, Red Bull challenges competitors to use their muscles, courage and ingenuity to win the race that is not only judged by pure pace, but also showmanship and out-of-the-box thinking.
