The MPV segment remains competitive despite the growing popularity of SUVs. There is still a significant demand for practical vans that offer comfortable accommodations for numerous passengers. The Mercedes V-Class has been a standout in this segment, known for its luxurious and relaxed approach that competitors struggle to match. In 2023, the V-Class received an update, and we had the opportunity to experience the V300d Exclusive to determine if it still reigns supreme in its segment.
Much like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the V-Class is synonymous with luxury and opulence. Its design has become iconic, commanding a reverence unmatched by other vans. Although the 2023 update brought minimal changes, the vehicle remains desirable. The subtle enhancements include refreshed LED lights for the front and rear, along with slightly reworked bumpers. While some may argue that the V-Class is starting to show its age, it continues to be highly sought after. Our test model looked elegant in its white paint and 19” AMG 7-twin-spoke alloys.
ONE OF THE BEST CABINS IN THE GAME
The updated interior of the V300d is as premium as expected from a Mercedes. High-quality materials remind you of its luxurious nature. However, the V-Class retains the older screen setup, with the infotainment system centrally mounted on the dashboard and analogue gauges for the driver. A dual-screen setup would have been preferable, but the infotainment screen is vivid and crisp, powered by Mercedes’s latest MBUX system with effective voice control. The climate control is operated via tactile physical buttons, which is a plus for those who prefer physical controls. The redesigned centre console includes a touchpad, although the responsive touchscreen often renders it unnecessary. The V300d Exclusive includes amenities like wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, heated and cooled cupholders, a premium Burmester sound system, and electrically operated front seats with heating and cooling functionality.
PRACTICALITY AND ERGONOMICS
A van’s main appeal lies in its practicality and ergonomics, and the V-Class excels in both areas. The cabin experience is elevated by focusing on luxury. In addition to the front seats, five more are arranged in a 2:3 configuration for the second and third rows, respectively. The second row features individual captain’s chairs with armrests, separated by a sturdy pop-up table that serves multiple purposes, from a laptop stand to a picnic table. The second-row seats can also be removed and remounted to face the third row, creating a conference-like seating arrangement. Although adjusting the seats requires some effort, the cabin remains joyful, further enhanced by dual panoramic sunroofs. Both rows benefit from air conditioning, with controls accessible to second-row passengers and controls for the dual electrically operated cabin doors.
DRIVING IMPRESSIONS
The V300d is equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, delivering 174 kW and 500 Nm of torque to the rear wheels through a smooth nine-speed automatic transmission. This setup provides ample torque for effortless highway speeds and anxiety-free overtaking. The progressive power delivery ensures a smooth and comfortable ride, which is particularly appreciated when travelling with a napping baby. Maneuvering the V300d around town is surprisingly easy, thanks to excellent visibility and a suite of cameras and sensors. The light steering adds to the effortless driving experience expected from a luxury vehicle. The well-insulated cabin minimises noise levels, allowing for calm conversations. The compliant suspension absorbs road imperfections, maintaining a comfortable ride, although there is some body roll at speed. The V300d’s sturdy ride quality explains why executives and celebrities favour it.
LAST WORD
While several players are in the luxury van market, only some can match the Mercedes V300d’s execution. It benefits from the prestigious Mercedes brand, a powerful engine, and excellent driving dynamics, solidifying its position as the best in its segment. Consequently, it is also the most expensive, with a price tag exceeding R2 million with options. However, for those seeking the best experience their money can buy, the V300d is an obvious choice and will elevate their status.
