Porsche’s Macan series blends performance and practicality like no other in compact luxury SUVs. Before a new all-electric version replaces the current line-up, we sampled two leading examples that showcase Porsche’s engineering excellence: the Macan T and the Macan GTS. Each represents peak performance in their engine classes – the Macan T with its efficient four-cylinder turbocharged engine, and the Macan GTS featuring a robust V6 turbo.
The Porsche Macan, launched in 2014, marked the brand’s entry into the compact luxury SUV market. Named after the Indonesian word for “tiger,” it was designed to combine SUV practicality with performance and handling, which is synonymous with Porsche sports cars. Since its debut, the Macan has become one of Porsche’s best-selling models, praised for its dynamic driving experience, luxurious interior, and versatility. Its success expanded Porsche’s line-up, offering various trims and performance levels for enthusiasts seeking everyday usability and spirited driving.
To honour the Macan’s legacy, we tested two models in different environments, each representing the pinnacle of Porsche’s compact SUV technology in their respective engine classes – the Macan T and Macan GTS.
THE URBAN WUNDERKIND
Both Macan models share Porsche’s dedication to quality and dynamics, but the Macan T offers a unique combination of agility and urban-friendly features, making it particularly appealing for city dwellers.
Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 195 kW and 400 Nm, the Macan T delivers brisk acceleration suitable for urban driving while maintaining commendable fuel efficiency – a notable advantage for daily commuting. The lighter engine enhances agility, allowing more responsive handling in tight city streets and heavy traffic.
Inside, the Macan T’s cabin balances functionality with understated luxury. Exclusive upholstery combines leather and Sport-Tex Stripe fabric with silver stitching, adding sophistication. Eight-way electrically adjustable sport seats provide exceptional comfort and support, ideal for trips across town or longer journeys. The multifunction GT sports steering wheel, inspired by the 911, places essential controls within easy reach, enhancing driver engagement.
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, accessed via a 10.9-inch full HD touchscreen, offers seamless navigation, media, and vehicle settings control. Standard Apple CarPlay integration and voice control keep drivers connected without distraction.
The Macan T excels in urban environments. Compact dimensions and precise steering make manoeuvring through congested streets straightforward. The seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission ensures smooth gear changes, whether accelerating from a stoplight or merging onto a highway. Standard ParkAssist with a reversing camera simplifies parking in tight spaces.
The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system adjusts damping based on driving conditions, providing a comfortable ride over uneven city roads while maintaining Porsche’s expected handling prowess.
Practicality is addressed with ample interior space and rear seats that fold to expand cargo capacity – useful for grocery runs or transporting larger items. Three-zone automatic climate control keeps all passengers comfortable.
Safety features geared toward urban driving include lane departure warning and front and rear ParkAssist. The elevated seating position provides clear road visibility, enhancing driver confidence.
Externally, subtle design elements like Agate Grey Metallic accents on side mirrors, front trims, and rear logos distinguish the Macan T.

THERE AND BACK IN THE GTS
To test the Macan GTS, we embarked on a road trip from Gauteng to the Morukuru Family Farm House in the Madikwe Game Reserve – an elevated automotive experience. As the sporty flagship of Porsche’s SUV line-up, the Macan GTS blends power, comfort, and impeccable design.
Powered by a 2.9-liter V6 biturbo engine delivering 324 kW, the Macan GTS accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds with the Sport Chrono package. It felt agile and robust on open highways, effortlessly reaching high speeds while maintaining stability.
Porsche’s attention to chassis dynamics is evident. The optimised chassis with sport air suspension provides a firm yet accommodating ride, adjusting continuously to road conditions. This ensures smooth drives on tar and comfort on gravel. The air suspension, now 10% more rigid on the front axle and 15% firmer on the rear, contributes to exceptional handling.
The Macan GTS’s interior reflects Porsche’s dedication to luxury and functionality. The modernised centre console with touch surfaces replaces traditional buttons, creating a sleek interface. The short selector lever and standard analogue clock add classic Porsche elegance. The 10.9-inch full HD touchscreen of the PCM system offers seamless access to functions, controllable via voice commands.
Four of us travelled comfortably in the Macan GTS, with ample space for everyone. The seats provided unmatched comfort, especially with optional 18-way sport adjustments and Race-Tex upholstery. Generous cargo space easily accommodated our luggage, highlighting its practicality.
Visually, the Macan GTS is striking, with a redesigned nose featuring black accents, LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), and Sport Design exterior mirrors enhancing its aggressive stance.
Our journey through varied landscapes showcased the Macan GTS’s versatility. Whether cruising highways or navigating gravel roads, it handled with poise and confidence. The advanced PASM system continuously regulated damping, ensuring optimal performance regardless of terrain.
Throughout our journey, the Macan GTS turned an ordinary road trip into an extraordinary adventure. Its power, luxury, and technology blend, make it a standout in the premium SUV segment.
