TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS

Since its South African debut in 2021, the Toyota Corolla Cross has achieved remarkable success. It has consistently ranked as the nation’s best-selling SUV, hybrid vehicle, and passenger car. Now, Toyota has introduced a series of updates to this compact SUV to further solidify its dominance in a segment that has become increasingly competitive due to the influx of Chinese brands.

Toyota’s decision to refresh the Corolla Cross is clearly a calculated response to the growing popularity of Chinese SUVs in South Africa. These newcomers often boast extensive safety and convenience features, so Toyota has upped its game by adding notable enhancements across the Corolla Cross range. The aim is to retain its top spot in the market by offering even more value, technology, and refinement.

EXTERIOR EVOLUTION

The updated Corolla Cross introduces a striking exterior design that distinguishes it from its predecessor. A geometric bumper and grille design make an immediate impression, while redesigned headlamps with sequential turn signals (available on XR and GR-S models) add a touch of modernity. The XR and GR-S also feature uniquely shaped Bi-Beam LED lamps and crystal-like LED daytime running lights, enhancing visibility and aesthetic appeal.

At the rear, the SUV’s updated light design now includes an inner lens for “improved precision and uniformity”, according to the brand. Two new exterior colours – Brass Gold and Oxide Bronze – provide additional customisation options. The new carbon-neutral badge is a subtle nod to Toyota’s commitment to sustainability.

INTERIOR ENHANCEMENTS

Step inside the refreshed Corolla Cross, and you’ll find several interior updates designed to elevate comfort and convenience. Premium materials, such as actual stitching on the instrument panel and console lid, contribute to a more sophisticated cabin atmosphere. High-quality floor carpets with a heel pad add a touch of practicality.

The addition of rear reclining seats and USB-C ports increases comfort for rear passengers, addressing a feature gap previously highlighted by competitors. Air vents further enhance cabin comfort, while wireless smartphone charging on the Xs, XR, and GR-S grades aligns the Corolla Cross with modern convenience expectations.

CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

One of the standout updates to the Corolla Cross is its suite of technological upgrades. All models now feature a larger, high-resolution infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. This system includes a multi-touch interface, improved Bluetooth connectivity, and a more intuitive user experience.

In terms of driver information, Toyota has introduced a fully digital 12.3″ driver information display on the XR and GR-S models, providing crisp graphics and customisable themes. These top derivatives also benefit from a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, which greatly aids visibility in tight spaces, and a power rear hatch with a kick sensor for hands-free convenience. Across the range, additional parking sensors and a newly introduced electric parking brake further enhance usability.

UNCHANGED BUT RELIABLE POWERTRAINS

Under the bonnet, Toyota has chosen to retain the existing powertrain options (1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol), which have been well-received by customers for their reliability and efficiency. The lineup also includes hybrid variants that continue to set benchmarks in fuel economy.

During the recent launch drive, the Xs and XR Hybrid derivatives demonstrated the same predictable and confidence-inspiring driving dynamics that have endeared the Corolla Cross to its loyal customer base.

Toyota has also bolstered the Corolla Cross’s safety credentials with features like Rear Occupant Detection, which does exactly what it says on the box, and a clearer back monitor with multiple view modes. The Park Distance Control system has been refined to offer intuitive assistance, making parking in crowded urban areas a breeze.

The hybrid models also carry forward Toyota’s commitment to sustainability, supported by the carbon-neutral badge and the brand’s robust dealer network, ensuring customers’ long-term peace of mind.

LAST WORD

The updated Corolla Cross is more than an incremental improvement; it reaffirms Toyota’s ability to adapt and innovate. By addressing the evolving needs of South African consumers and responding to the increasing competition from Chinese brands, Toyota has ensured that the Corolla Cross remains at the forefront of its segment.

With its combination of cutting-edge technology, enhanced comfort, and enduring reliability, the Corolla Cross continues to build on its legacy while paving the way for a sustainable future. In a segment as dynamic as this, it’s clear that Toyota’s compact SUV is well-equipped to retain its crown.
