UNBREAKABLE GRIT

In rally racing, few experiences are as exhilarating and eye-opening as witnessing the action live. Last month, we were invited to immerse ourselves in the heart-pounding world of rally racing during the NTT Tzaneen Rally. This pivotal event encompassed Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2023 South African National Rally Championship. Nestled against the stunning backdrop of Tzaneen in the Limpopo province, this rally was a test of skill and determination.

Our adventure began early in the morning at the Toyota SA Head Office. Although I arrived slightly later than the rest of the invited media, I should have requested a pick-up from my house, as the route to Tzaneen conveniently passed through my neighbourhood.

WARM WELCOME FROM TGR

Before delving into the thrilling rally action, I must acknowledge the remarkable hospitality the TGR (Toyota Gazoo Racing) team extended to us. They took exceptional care of us when we arrived, ensuring our trip and stay were extraordinary.

One unforgettable highlight of my visit was the privilege of joining the Tzaneen Toyota Dealership for a traditional South African braai on the night of our arrival. It was a delightful evening filled with laughter, camaraderie, and mouthwatering food.

ROUND 5: OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

The first day of the rally, Round 5, dawned on Friday, 25 August, with high hopes for the TGRSA NRC (National Rally Championship) team. However, the day brought unforeseen challenges. Jono van Wyk and Nico Swartz faced engine problems in their Toyota Starlet, a setback that regrettably led to their withdrawal from the event. Meanwhile, teammates Mandla Mdakane and Kes Naidoo encountered difficulties due to a hard landing that caused their engine to shift within the bay, ultimately forcing them to make the tough decision to withdraw.

ROUND 6: RESILIENCE ON DISPLAY

Undeterred by the setbacks of the previous day, the TGRSA NRC team displayed unwavering resilience and determination on Saturday during Round 6. Through a night of intensive work, the team successfully repaired Mandla Mdakane’s Toyota Starlet, showcasing their expertise and dedication.

The NTT Tzaneen Rally undeniably posed challenges, with mechanical issues testing the limits of the competitors. Nevertheless, Mandla Mdakane and Kes Naidoo’s remarkable tenacity led them to a second-place finish in their class, a testament to their skill and the extraordinary commitment of the TGRSA NRC team.

WHAT LIES AHEAD: DELMAS RALLY

As the dust settled on the NTT Tzaneen Rally, the TGRSA NRC team wasted no time setting their sights on the next thrilling challenge. The Delmas Rally – scheduled for 20 to 21 October 2023 in Mpumalanga –will host Rounds 7 and 8 of the 2023 NRC season. The team remains steadfast in their pursuit of excellence, eager to build on their experiences and successes as they continue their championship journey.

Beyond the exhilarating rally action, Tzaneen had another delightful surprise for us. We couldn’t leave this picturesque town without indulging in the local produce of avocados, a memorable and tasty parting gift from a remarkable journey.

LAST WORD

This first-hand experience of the NTT Tzaneen Rally was thrilling and enlightening. Witnessing rally racing live is an entirely different experience that deepens one’s appreciation for the sport. I extend our sincere thanks to Toyota GR for this exceptional opportunity to be part of the rally action. The TGRSA NRC team’s resilience and the warm welcome from Tzaneen will be in my memories for years.
