WHEN QUIRKY IS COOL

Fiat 500X 1.4T Sport

The quirky Fiat 500X has been refreshed for 2023 with some minor cosmetic improvements and the addition of a soft-roof option. We recently spent time with the Sport to discover if the country’s most eccentric crossover is still as cool as before.

Who’s to say that a crossover can’t be quirky to be cool? As the tide of SUVs and crossovers rises, some buyers shun the idea that cookie-cutter is the way to go. If this is you, the recently updated Fiat 500X, with its revised bumper, new headlights, and new ‘500’ badge on the grille, should be at the top of your shopping list. 

Since launching the 500X in February 2021, key updates have been added along with the introduction of the Fiat 500X Sport Extended Soft Top (EST) for a limited time. Although we tested the closed-roof Sport, both versions offer exceptional grip, optimal handling on the street, and improved safety and maximum fun.

ICONIC DESIGN

To differentiate it from the entry-level Cross, the 500X Sport shows off stylish design cues that include body-coloured wheel arch mouldings, side skirts, 19” wheels (the Cross is shod with 18-inchers), for a more dynamic stance, along with Sport badging and dual chrome exhaust tips. 

Inside, the 500X Sport is equipped with a techno leather and Alcantara swathed steering wheel, a titanium-styled dashboard finish, and a 3.5” colour instrument cluster. The Sport theme is topped off with the binnacle cover finished in Alcantara. Additional highlights include automatic dual-zone air conditioning and the excellent UConnect touchscreen navigation and infotainment system. 

The state-of-the-art 7” system offers a wide range of functions, including a hands-free system, Bluetooth technology, and voice recognition. Available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system’s user-friendly interface allows you to manage maps, music, contacts, and more, without getting bogged down in layer upon layer of intricate menus.

There is also no fault to be found with the 500X’s safety equipment. Along with the customary ABS brakes and stability control, there are also six airbags and lane-keep assistance. Pull-away on an incline is a cinch thanks to hill-hold assist that prevents the car from rolling back.

FUN ON THE ROAD

Thankfully, Fiat has done away with manual transmission options, meaning all variants are now equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, with power supplied by Fiat’s familiar 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers an admirable 103 kW and 230 Nm – a significant boost over many of its segment rivals, including the Suzuki Grand Vitara 1.5 Hybrid GLX AllGrip and Kia Seltos 1.4T-GDI GT Line. 

The engine and transmission combination generally works well, although some turbo lag when overtaking needs to be factored into your driving style.

The fun truly starts through the bends, where the Sport’s 19” wheels give it ample grip, and its independent suspension smooths out most imperfections. If you do, however, prefer a softer ride, the Cross, with its 18” alloys and higher profile tyres is a slightly more sophisticated option.

LAST WORD

There are many reasons to like the Fiat 500X. Being well-equipped and beautifully made using high-quality materials stands out for us. It’s also quite sprightly, and with styling this unique in its segment, you’ll never be part of the crowd. 

As you’d expect, this level of coolness comes at a price. Our Sport tester’s R560,900 price tag is significant when measured against competitors such as the range-topping Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid, and the Kia Seltos GT-Line.
